Secure Your Account Now, Before Something Bad Happens
Five minutes today saves a week of lockout later. Do these on every platform you care about.
Turn on two-factor authentication
An attacker with your password still cannot sign in without the second code. Use an authenticator app, not SMS, where the platform offers it.
Use a unique password everywhere
If one site is breached, a reused password opens your social account. One password per platform, stored in a password manager.
Lock down the email behind it
Most account-takeovers start at the email address, not the social platform. Secure that account first — same rules: unique password, two-factor on.
Check your active sessions
Each platform shows where you are signed in. Sign out of anything you do not recognise, and review recently added devices.
Add a recovery phone and email
Up-to-date recovery contacts are your lifeline when a password fails. Old ones are a common reason lockouts drag on.
Review app and site access
Revoke apps and websites you no longer use. A forgotten third-party app is a standing invitation back into your account.
Already locked out, or hacked?
Work through these in order. Most lockouts end here — no service needed.
What to Try if Your Account Is Hacked
Act fast. Every platform has a built-in path for exactly this — use it before anything else.
Report the compromise, immediately
Facebook and Instagram have a ‘report a compromised account’ flow; X has a ‘report a hack’ form. Start it from a device you trust, even if you cannot sign in.
Reset the password from the login screen
Choose ‘forgot password’ and reset it. On a device the attacker does not control, this locks them out even if they still have the old password.
Check the email for the reset link
If the reset email never arrives, the attacker may have changed the email on the account. That is the point where the platform’s ownership-verification steps begin.
Ask a friend to help, with proof
Each platform lets a trusted contact request a reset, or you can verify your identity with a photo of your ID. Have that ready before you start.
Sign out every other session
Once you are back in, sign out of all other devices and sessions, and change the password of the email behind the account.
Act within hours, not days
The faster you report, the more the platform’s automated protections still work against the attacker. Speed is your best tool.
If You Cannot Solve It: Account Recovery
